Is My Perfectionism Harming My Salon Business?

Sep 13, 2022

I'm a product of limited beliefs, perfectionism, and a task-focused salon upbringing.

My name is Ethan Flores, I am a coach with Destroy the Hairdresser, and I have spent the better part of the last two years unlearning everything I was taught about the salon industry. Here are the top three things I have unlearned and relearned more proactively.

Accountability is about uncomfortability

We have written out our boundaries and listed our non-negotiables. Yet, we still let things slide because it's easier to let the behavior go on than to have a proactive conversation. At Destroy the Hairdresser, we have created a tool called a "You & Me" that allows us to hold our teams accountable for behaviors that may not be working in our salons.

Micromanagement is a symptom, not a solution

The solution might not be what you expect. We should hire people who will do things differently than us and have different ideas than us. Allow them the space for risk-taking and personal responsibility.

A good boundary benefits both parties

As people, we are not obligated to be on call 24/7. We are allowed to create our own boundaries in which we tell people how and when to communicate with us. If I take care of myself, I can better the culture around me. My boundaries help others create their boundaries.
